Cantadora de Tambora · San Martín de Loba, Colombia
The voice of the Magdalena River. 36 years carrying Afro-Colombian Tambora to stages across the Americas, Europe, and Africa. My singing is resistance.
The Artist
Martina Camargo is the most prominent singer and composer in Tambora, the Afro-descendant roots tradition of Colombia's Magdalena River region. Born in San Martín de Loba in 1960, she carries a multigenerational lineage from her great-grandmother Nicolasa Puerta and her father Cayetano Camargo, a remarkable composer, poet, and oral historian.
Her breakthrough album Canto, Palo y Cuero (2009) sparked a global remix ecosystem surpassing 500 million streams, championed on dance floors by names like Keinemusik and Dennis Cruz, all without any paid promotion. Songs from 2009 still drive over 70% of her monthly streams in 2026, sustained purely by viral discovery and remix culture.
Martina is a Latin Grammy nominated artist (Best Folk Album, 2024), a respected cultural advocate for Afro-Colombian rights, and has collaborated with Grammy-winning icons including Aterciopelados and Petrona Martínez.
